From 6 to 8 October, representatives of Latvian and Finnish institutions met with representatives of the National Bureau of Statistics of Moldova (NBS) in Chișinău to plan the implementation of the European Union-funded project “Strengthening the National Statistical System in Moldova” and define its priorities. The project aims to strengthen Moldova’s statistical system and gradually align it with European Union standards.
Latvia is represented in the project by the Central Finance and Contracting Agency (CFCA) and the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSB), while Finland is represented by the HAUS Finnish Institute of Public Management and Statistics Finland.
During working sessions, the partners and the NBS assessed the current situation, identified key needs and discussed the expert support required. The discussions focused on three areas: strengthening institutional and administrative capacity, improving statistical methodologies and modernising digital infrastructure.
The NBS highlighted the need to develop human resources, improve data management and strengthen institutional capacity. The project partners agreed to continue planning specific activities and clarifying the contribution of each participating institution.
During the visit, the Latvian delegation also met with representatives of the Embassy of Latvia in Moldova to discuss the project concept, opportunities for cooperation and current developments in the country.
In its role as Latvia’s development cooperation agency, CFCA is participating in the project together with CSB to share Latvian expertise in modernising statistical systems, strengthening public administration and implementing European Union requirements.
Moldova is one of Latvia’s priority partner countries for development cooperation. Latvia supports Moldova’s path towards European Union membership by sharing its experience in implementing reforms, strengthening public administration and implementing European standards. The project will contribute to the development of Moldova’s statistical system and strengthen cooperation between institutions in Moldova, Latvia and Finland.
